Cancer
General Intro
- A leading cause of death: 42%
male, 39% female
Development
of Cancer
- Initiation
- We all have cancerous cells, our immune function keeps them at
bay
- Proliferation
- Cell
death
- Angiogenesis
- Tumor is growing fast, Bie Jia (soft-shelled turtle shell) is
good here
- Invasion
- From local area through blood, lymph and on into entire body
- Metastasis
Western
Etiology
- Environmental
carcinogenic factors (water, bacteria)
- Physical
geographical carcinogenic factors (mountains with radiation,
iron & copper can make grow faster)
- Biological
carcinogenic factors (HIV with Karposi carcoma)
- Genetic
factors (Family history, Hormone Replacement Therapy, Jewish
women carry gene)
- Nutritional
factors (saccharine, sugar, meats)
- Age
Primary
Cancer Treatment
- Surgery
- Radiation
Therapy
- Chemotherapy
- Systemic
Cancer Therapy
Prevention
of Cancer
- Change
Lifestyle
- Chemo
prevention
- Early
detection
Eastern Concept
- Cause of Cancer
- Weakness
of anti-pathogenic Qi
- Declining
of the resistance of the body
- Invasion
of pathogenic factors
Etiology
- Emotional
stimulation - Stress, depression, anxiety
- Irregular
diet - Excess drinking, hard, cold, hot & roasted/fried
food, eating fast, excess meat, dairy products, greasy
food, unsaturated fatty acid, smoked meat
- Invasion
of pathogens - Exogenous pathogens, misc pathogens such as
chemicals, radiation
- Genetic
Pathology
- Dysfunction
of Zang Fu
- Deficiency of
Zang Fu -
Spleen & Stomach Qi Deficiency, Lung or Kidney Qi
Deficiency
- Excess of
Zang Fu - Liver
Qi Stagnation, Qi & Blood Stagnation, Blood Stagnation
- Phlegm
Damp accumulation, turbid phlegm - leading to Spleen Qi
Deficiency
- Heat
toxin accumulation - Heat invasion (EPF)
- Chemo
or radiation
- Diet leading
to Spleen Damp accumulation, leading to Heat
toxin - Alcohol intake
- Environment
- Misc.
- Tonifying
anti-pathogenic Qi & strengthen the body resistance.
- Prevention
of the formation and development of cancer with tonic herbs and
formulas.
- Being
able to prevent the occurrence of precancerous lesions,
decreasing the rate of occurrence of cancers.
- Many
clinical and experimental reports show that notifying
anti-pathogenic Qi formulas and single herbs + polysaccharides
from fungi produce anti-cancer and cancer prevention action on
the body, thus decreasing, preventing and eliminating the
invasion of harmful materials.
(Basic tonifying formula
for cancer - Shi Quan Da Bu Wan) (Good single herbs - Wu Jia
Shen & Huang Qin)
Increasing
immunity of the organism
- The
body possesses the capacity of subduing cancer, the immune cells
along with other humoral immune factors are sufficient to
destroy tumor cells. Tumor patients treated with Tonifying
Spleen & Kidney herbs along with chemotherapy,
maintained the same level of cellular and humoral immunity as
before treatment due to prevention of immuno-inhibition
with chemotherapy.
- (If
Yang Deficient, can use Yang tonics otherwise use Qi Tonics) -
be careful and monitor the patient's Heat
Enhancement
of the regulating function of endocrine and humor
- Most
chronic patients show Kidney Yin Deficiency symptoms
especially in the intermediate or advanced stage and for patients
recovering from radiotherapy
- Gan
Cao & Shu Di Huang improve the effect of adrenocortical
hormones
- Fu Zi
improves the effect of adrenocortex
- Ren
Shen, Lu Rong, Huang Qi prolong the estrogen period in mice
- Tonifying
Spleen & Kidney herbs strengthen and protect function of
adrenal cortex and other endocrine glands
Protecting
bone marrow and promoting hemopoietic function
- Hemopoietic
function of the body is closely related to the Spleen &
Kidney function. Tonifying Qi, Blood & Yang herbs have
a marked influence on the hemopoietic system. (Qi is the mother
of Blood)
- Single
herbs that stimulate the marrow, increase erythrocytes and
hemoglobin - Huang Qi, Dang Shen, Shu Di, Dang Gui, Shan Zhu Yu,
Bu Gu Zhi, Huang Jing, Niu Zhen Zi, Long Yan Rou, Ren Shen, Dan
Shen, Bai Zhu, Ba Ji Tian, Ji Xue Teng, & E Jiao.
Strengthening
the digestive system, absorption and improving material metabolism
Enhancement
of automatic function of organism
Increasing
effects of therapeutic measures in Western medicine
- Generally,
Western medicine therapies are aggressive and have side effects.
As adjuvant therapy with tonifying herbs, the range of
their use could definitely expand, diminish side effects, and
increase their therapeutic effects.
Promoting Qi
& Blood circulation and removing Stagnation

- Regulating
the emotional condition Improving the patho-physiological
condition of the patient’s body

Combining
Radiotherapy and TCM Treatment
Enhancing the radio
therapeutic effect - Caution with Blood movers,
can spread cancer
- Radiotherapy
fails due to the presence of “anoxic cells” in the tumor
tissue. Chinese herbs can mildly improve Blood circulation,
dilate the capillaries, and eliminate the anoxia state. Use: Dan
Shen and Ji Xue Teng
Reducing the side effects
of radiotherapy, Common manifestations of radiotherapy:
- Generally,
radiation is considered as “Heat Toxin” which damages the
body’s Qi & Yin. Most patients show body’s Qi & Yin Deficient
during and after radiotherapy. It consumes body fluid, injures
salivary glands and normal mucous membranes, decreasing the
secretions. This causes erosion, ulcers, and inflammation of local
skin and mucous membranes, destroys normal cells and bone
marrow, causing leucocytopenia, thrombocytopenia, pancytopenia
and weakening of the body’s resistance.
General reaction:
- Qi & Yin Deficiency,
reaction includes dizziness, shortness of breath, palpitations,
weakness, insomnia, irritability, thirst, dry throat, erosions
and ulcers. In severe cases there is difficulty swallowing, loss
of appetite, thirsty for cold, 5-palm heat, night sweats,
constipation, deep red tongue without coat, thready &
rapid or weak pulse.
Local reaction:
- Erythema, dry or wet erosion of
buccal or digestive mucosa, with edema or ulcers, radial
colitis, could have digestive tract bleeding, radial cystitis,
pnuemonia or pulmonary fibrosis. Could have general paralysis
and encephalomalacia.
