::What
is Acupuncture and
Traditional
Chinese Medicine (TCM)?

Traditional
Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a complete health care system, which has
been used to diagnose and treat disease, prevent illness and improve
well-being for thousands of years.
Acupuncture
originated in China more than 5,000 years ago and due to its proven
effectiveness has been embraced throughout the world.
Acupuncture and TCM are receiving increasing acceptance among
Western medical practitioners.
Acupuncture can be effective for physical, psychological and
emotional problems.
It is one of the
most commonly used medical systems in the world.
TCM theory
proposes that disease is the result of a disruption in the natural
balance of the body. When there is disease, acupuncture, herbal
medicine and other TCM modalities restore natural balance and energy
flow to allow the body to heal.
What separates TCM from biomedicine is that while biomedicine is
effective at treating acute trauma, TCM aims to treat underlying
imbalances as well as symptoms.
TCM treats
disease without side effects because TCM treats the person as a
whole, not just the symptoms.
TCM can work effectively alongside biomedicine. For example, it can
relieve the side effects of medications or accelerate healing after
surgery or an accident. TCM does not require patients to choose
between their "regular" doctor and an acupuncturist.
